A summer spectacular
There is so much to see in the Rose Garden over the summer season. The planting has been designed to pique the interest of gardeners and gardening enthusiasts alike, as well as attracting wildlife.
Rose varieties provide a stunning range of colour from whites, yellows and creams to pinks and crimsons. See varieties such as Rosa 'Gertrude Jekyll', Rosa 'Darcy Bussell' and Rosa 'A Shropshire Lad'.
Late flowering hydrangeas such as Hydrangea paniculata 'Limelight' and Hydrangea arborescens 'Incrediball' complement and contrast with the roses.
A multitude of annuals, biennials and perennials add yet more colour, form, texture and fragrance to the seasonal display.

Creating the Rose Garden
The Rose Garden is a relatively new concept in the history of the Hampton Court Gardens.
This area was once William III's kitchen garden, which supplied the court with vegetables and herbs. Our Rose Garden on the same site has been evolving since the 1930s and the shape of the beds reflects the original formal grid design.
Originally roses were planted in few island beds, but now this wonderful space has developed to include formal beds and borders of rose species and cultivars.
We've also added grass paths through the rose beds, to allow more intimacy with the roses. This also allows for easier maintenance and upkeep.
Looking to the future
As the saying goes, 'a good garden never stands still', and we’re now giving the Rose Garden a new lease of life.
We’ve got exciting plans for the next three to five years and further ahead, so there will something new to see each year.
