What was it like for Queen Victoria growing up in Kensington Palace?
Students will explore the palace in which Victoria spent her childhood, learn about some of her favourite toys and pastimes and experience some of the sounds and smells of the time.
Based partly in the learning centre and partly on route in the palace, the session will feature the following:
- A sensory story about Victoria’s childhood, the strict ‘Kensington System’ which she grew up in, the gardens where she spent her time and the animals that kept her company.
- Trying on Victorian costume and learning about when Victoria became Queen.
- A sensory tour around palace, exploring the rooms in which Princess Victoria spent her childhood, where she found out she was queen and held her first official meeting as monarch.
- Object handling, focusing on the toys and games that Victoria played with as a child.
Learning objectives
Students will:
- Learn about Kensington Palace’s stories and history.
- Be empowered to use their senses to explore new historic environments.
- Develop social and emotional skills.
This session is suitable for students with MLD, SLD and PMLD, aged between 6 and 16 years, who attend special schools or units. Please note that the presenter will be in costume unless requested otherwise by the school.
